Food Readiness for Safe Foods

The easiest ways to guarantee the health and safety of the foods we eat is to grow it ourselves. Container gardening for food would be in the best interest of everyone if, we learned the few simple gardening skills that it takes to grow our own food in containers at home.

More and more often, the news has been warning us of the risk of getting sick by eating contaminated foods. from a variety of sources; many people have died increasing our need to be concern about the foods we eat.

Acres of farmland are not required to make a salad to add to dinner for a family of four.

Preparing a dinner salad only takes a tomato or two from a plant growing in an attractive pot by the window with a few handfuls of lettuce from a growing shelf at the back door, a cucumber from a vine in a hanging basket and a few pinches of herbs growing along the way.

Preparing salads like this is beneficial in other ways, too. The home grown salad took less time then shopping for it because nobody had to leave the house and we, know how the food was raised and that, it is safe to eat . It is washed to our standards plus we get the joy and satisfaction of knowing  we grew it ourselves.

With the right gardening skills, vegetables and many fruits can be grown in containers that can be harvested as needed year round, keeping the household in fresh healthy groceries every single day.  All it takes is a nice looking container filled with potting soil and a few seeds. Directions for growing each plant are located on the package. Place the container where it gets sunlight and warmth, water and it, will bear food in about two months. Gardening is so simply these days that prepackaged soil comes with fertilizer and all that has to be done is watering and trimming. It can not get any easier then that!

Another advantage is that vegetable plants can be placed attractively throughout homes and outdoor area for extra beauty which also gives the plants a chance to clean the air around our homes, there are so many advantages to growing our own food at home that I think the advantages greatly outweigh the consequences of not learning this gardening skill.

I think it would be a tremendous asset to have everyone growing food in every household and city worldwide. Not only does container gardening for food at home give us fresh food to eat that cost very little in time and money, if a disaster happened, we would not be cut off from our food source.

As an example, if the apartment buildings each had growing areas and containers full of veggies then if the building fell during an earthquake, there would be food available for the survivors. The food would be thrown everywhere but it would be food and in those dire times, that could play an important part in living or perishing.

The consequences of not knowing how to grow our own food in containers makes us and our family dependent on outside sources for nourishing our bodies and keeping healthy, if those sources are ever cut off from by disaster or cost of living issues, or trucking line issues, or contaminated to the point of making us sick, what do we do?

Nothing.  There is nothing we can do at that point except wait and depend on the outside source to reach us with food.  We are doomed, if they can not reach us.

On a brighter note, if a disaster never strikes during our life then we remain dependent on processed foods that are grown for mass markets and can be less healthy for us. Many vegetables are only available at certain times of the year  and we can only enjoy them seasonally,  but,  if we grow them at home in a controlled environment then we can have the pleasure of our favorites any time of the year.

In conclusion, growing our own food in containers at home would improve our world’s resources while enabling every household and community twenty four seven access to healthy food to eat year round. We would feel more secure knowing that if something happened to our food chain we could survive until it was corrected.

This is one of the easiest ways to guarantee the health and safety of the foods we eat and if everyone learned these simple gardening skills of growing household food in containers then the whole world would benefit greatly.
